The Cenotes
While in Cancun, you must experience the smooth limestone rocks and turquoise sinkhole waters that comes with Mexico’s cenotes. Cenotes are beautiful and you will want to take a dip in order to get that thrilling experience.
The nearby cenotes while in Cancun are found around the Ruta de Los Cenotes Puerto Morelos. More examples of cenotes include Cenote Azul, Cenote la Noria, Cenotes Zacil Ha, Cenote Ikr Kil, Cenote Yal Ku and Gran Cenote.
Isla Mujeres Island
The island is located 13 kilometers off the coast from Cancun. You can access the place through a boat ride which is a beautiful experience. Here you will find amazing resorts with Mexican food and drinks and beautiful beaches for snorkeling and scuba diving. Other activities to do while in Isla Mujeres Island include; hiring a bike and tour around the local area, the Turtle Farm, Playa Norte and Punta Sur.
The Local Area (Downtown Area)
Most of Mexico’s street food, culture, souvenirs and artifacts can be found in the downtown area. This is where you will experience the real Cancun.
You don’t want to miss their amazing cuisines such as Tacos de Cochinita Pibil, Empanadas and Tamales. Mexicans are also friendly people. You will meet the locals that will teach you one or two things about their culture.

The Hotel Zone
The hotel zone in Cancun is the area with tourist hotels adjacent to the beach. If you’re looking for a 5-star resort this is the place for you.
Typically at the hotel zone there are many bars, restaurants, shopping centers and the beach. Despite prices being three times the local area, you will still get to enjoy the luxury of the hotel zone. You can find plenty of activities to keep you busy, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun.
Cancun NightClubs
Partying in Cancun is on another level. Cancun is the heart of nightlife and partying. There are various options of clubs to grab some drinks, dance and have fun. Some clubs will offer you themed parties while others have open bars and good music. Some of my top three clubs are HRoof Cancun, Chicabal Sunset Club and Hunters Bar.
Chichen Itza
Chichen Itza is among the world’s seven wonders. The area was built by the Mayan people and acts as an archaeological site. You can easily access the place from Cancun through a bus or drive to the place. The main historical element that you must see while in Chichen Itza is the El Castillo.
What to Avoid While in Cancun
- Don’t stay hidden in your hotel just because you paid for a whole inclusive package. Explore cancun, go to the local areas, go clubbing, go shopping and have fun while in Cancun
- Do not drink tap water to avoid having a sick stomach. Cancun tap water contains e coli and cryptosporidium microorganisms that will upset your stomach. Instead only drink sealed bottled water.
- Right before the exit room of the airport, you will find a lot of representatives and people that disguise themselves as tourist agents. They will try to convince you to carry your luggage, offer transportation and hotel services. Please avoid them and walk past them. You can try to be polite and just say thank you. These people are known for doubling or tripling their transportation or hotel services fees. Some are not legit tour agents. Hence, just avoid them and walk through the visitors gate or terminal gate. In fact, you will get legit shuttle services or your hotel transportation services waiting for you at the terminal gate.
- Do not lose your hotel bracelet. They are important because they show you are a guest at a particular hotel. Losing them means you will have to pay for the bracelet again.
- Also avoid taking taxis at the airport because they will triple the cost of transportation. Use a shared shuttle that you booked online before your trip.
- Avoid using your credit card everywhere. Cancun and Mexico in general has a high rate of fraudulent activities and you might become one of the victims. In case, you want to use the ATM, go to ATMs owned by local banks, they are at least secured and get your cash.
